The Most Popular Beauty Questions We’ve Been Asked on Advicesisters.com
The Advice Sisters have received so many letters reader questions about beauty issues that bother them. We selected the 10 most often asked beauty questions and answered them for everyone. *for 2020 we’ve added a bonus question #11.
Question #1: My Favorite Product or Color is Discontinued. Where Can I Get it Now?
We know that you can just fall in love with a particular shade or product and it’s your signature. But if a product is out of production, it might also make you look dated (translate: older than you’d like).
The good news is that there’s probably another shade or another product, maybe in a newer formula, and it will be your new signature.
If you really can’t let go of a certain color, there are places that will re-create if for you. Consider that maybe your complexion and/or skin tone has changed over time and something else really would be more flattering.
Question #2: What Foundation Is My Perfect Match?
One way to finesse a shade is to try it in a BB or CC cream or a mineral makeup that blends so it’s more forgiving if you don’t get just the right color match. However, the only way to really know if opaque color is flattering is to try a foundation on your skin init on your skin in proper lighting.
It’s even more challenging to select a foundation color when you’re looking at a bottle in a blister pack in the drugstore or online from a color swatch. Although we review a lot of foundations on advicesisters.com, don’t feel bad if you don’t always get it right, we don’t, either!
Our best advice is to purchase something you can return (save your receipt). try it at home and if it just doesn’t look right you can try, try again. For a few more tips to help you pick the right foundation read Beige, Nude, Sand, Buff Ivory? How to Choose the Right Color for Your Face.
Question #3: Are Those Pricey Products you Review Really Worth It?
If you want the latest and greatest you’ll pay a premium. We might also add that the most expensive products on the market (or the cheapest) won’t do a thing for you if they’re not the right ones for your skin.
However, the best products for you won’t’ work well if you don’t use them properly, regularly, and have patience. Read the directions before you use something new.
Question #4: Does Price Matter When it Comes to Shampoo and Other Hair Care Products?
However, if you’ve had a Keratin treatment or other chemical hair treatment, you may need products that are specifically designed to maintain them. Avoid products that contain sulfate and Sodium chloride. Sulfate can reduce the natural production of oil and leave your hair dry and Sodium chloride can diminish the effect of the keratin
We still can’t understand why hair products boasting properties such as “gluten-free” make a difference since you’re not eating them. But if your lifestyle demands that products are clean beauty or you’re vegan, it’s worth a little extra. Otherwise, what’s in the bottle or spray is going to do just fine.
QUESTIONS #5: Do You Really Have To Apply Sunscreen Every Day Even in Winter?
The sun’s rays penetrate through glass unless it has UV protectant coating. If you are driving or sitting near an open window, the sun’s rays are affecting your skin even if you are inside. Read http://www.advicesisters.com/beauty/sunscreen-and-sun-protection
Some like chemical sunblocks, some like the ones that feature minerals.
If you are absolutely resolved not to slather on sunscreen, at least choose products with SPF in them. We have reviewed a gazillion!
No matter what kind you choose, the most effective sunblock is the one you will actually like to use!
Question #6: Should I Believe Consumer Reviews?
At advicesisters.com we have reviewed literally thousands of each type of product when it comes to testing, evaluating, and comparing them. However, on consumer sites, some reviewers may be compensated to post positive reviews without even trying the product.
Others may say negative or positive things without any experience with similar products. Still, others may say that a product is the “best I’ve ever used” but they’ve used only a few other similar products in their entire lifetime.
We consider ourselves beauty experts. When it comes to consumer-driven review sites, we can’t tell you not to trust them, but we would say to be cautious. Someone who gives a product one star because “my friend got a rash from it” isn’t talking about your skin and may not be reporting the situation accurately.
However, if there are many, many reviews and they all say the same thing about a product, it’s a good bet that this one aspect of a product (e.g. it has a chemical scent or a very liquid consistency) is probably true.
Question #7: I Read About A Hot New Beauty Trend. Should I Try It?
What you see on the runway or in fashion magazines are often just concepts. Smart, savvy fashionistas translate them, make them their own, and use them sparingly and when appropriate.
Some high fashion looks really aren’t flattering although they may be fun for a club now and then. Blotted out brows or outlandish colors on your face are not going to work on most people.
We suggest using inexpensive products when checking out a trend. Then purchase more or different brands if you love the look. But use a little trendy-ness sparingly, don’t pile on too many at once.
Question #8: I’m Afraid To Try Red Lipstick, What Can I Wear That’s Flattering?
However, there’s at least one red (or almost red) tone that will flatter everyone. Advicesisters.com has reviewed a lot of red lip colors over the years. Trust us, there’s more than one way to rock red and one’s waiting for you.
Question #9: If I Can Get My Branded Product Cheaper Should I Buy It?
Diverted or grey market goods can look like the real thing, but like a faux designer bag, you might get some serious trouble along with that cheaper price. Read Diversion: A Serious Problem You Should Know About and Don’t Get Fooled By Faux Fragrances: What’s in that bargain bottle?
Even some popular retailers end up with diverted or grey market goods. If your favorite brands are deeply discounted or not in the original packaging, be wary. If a price seems too good to be true, it usually is.
