Last Month, Award-winning Origins launched yet another excellent product from Dr. Andrew Weil for Origins™called: Mega-Mushroom Skin Relief Advanced Face Serum ( $66.00 USD for 1.7 oz/50 ml and $110.00 USD for 3.4 oz/100ml). Before I go into the benefits of this exciting, new serum, I just want to tell you a tiny bit about Dr. Andrew Weil. He is a Harvard-trained medical doctor, botanist and world-renowned pioneer in integrative medicine, and named one of TIME magazine’s “100 Most Influential People” in the world. His views, and his many books, challenge conventional views on aging, incorporating conventional and more alternative medicine practices to optimize the body’s natural healing mechanisms. You might also like to know that Dr. Weil donates all of his after-tax profits from royalties from sales of Dr. Andrew Weil for Origins™ products to the Weil Foundation, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting integrative medicine through training, education and research. Many (if not all) of Dr. Weil’s products for Origins contain a “mega mushroom” formula, and while the list of ingredients is listed on the box (at least for Mega-Mushroom Skin Relief), it is in white type on a brown background so tiny, it is exhausting to read it. In any case, the list is way too long to post here. But mushrooms are rich in healing properties, and other cultures around the world have enjoyed their benefits for centuries. The shiitake mushroom has been a part of traditional Asian medicine for more than 6,000 years!
According to Dr. Weil, there is a strong connection between the skin’s response to irritation and premature aging of the skin. Irritation can be make worse by the stresses of everyday life, such as poor diet, lack of sleep, stress, hormonal shifts and external elements. Irritation and redness occurs in both men and women. This new (and fast-acting) Dr. Andrew Weil for Origins™ Mega-Mushroom Skin Rief Advanced Face Serum is designed to instantly soothe irritated skin (already good) and help prevent signs of premature aging (even better). Those with sensitive skin or rosacea sufferers will especially benefit. The product has Dr. Andrew Weil’s proprietary blend of the “Signature Six” key ingredients Hypsizygus ulmarius, Cordyceps and Reishi Mushrooms, Ginger, Turmeric and Holy Basil, and the formula is enhanced with a blend of anti-irritant ingredients, including Chaga and Pleurotus Mushrooms, Sea Buckthorn and Spike Moss, and Mangifera Leaf Extract.
Mega-Mushroom Skin Relief Serum is easy to use. Simply apply it to face and neck in the AM and PM. Some serums are greasy, and they leave a coating on your skin that makes it nearly impossible to wear foundation, or if you do apply makeup you have to wait some time before the serum is absorbed. This serum absorbs nearly immediately, leaving no greasy feel behind. As with most skin care products, getting good results really relies upon choosing the right products for your skin type and condition, using them properly, and regularly, and keeping your expectations, realistic. I did try the product for a few days, but I can’t use anything long enough to claim it is the next miracle in a jar, tube, or bottle. After one month of using this serum, apparently participants in the clinical studies were seeing high levels of satisfaction, along with clearer, less irritated skin. What I can say is that I have always been impressed with Origins products, and with Dr. Andrew Weil’s credentials. This product felt great, and did immediately soothe my skin. It is pricey, considering it’s only one step in a skin care regimen. But it appears to be a good one. If you are seeking something to soothe redness and irritation, and make your skin look smoother and more clear, you will definitely want to consider this product, and others, from Dr. Andrew Weil for Origins.
Get this new serum on the Origins Web Site and of course, at Origins stores.
When it comes to the actual serum, it is delivered by what appears to be an oxygen-free pump (to prevent contamination). I really like that. And, I appreciated the fresh scent. My skin felt a bit sticky, but that feeling didn’t last long, and I applied foundation with no problems. To get benefits, simply smooth it on morning and night before your moisturizer. *Note that serums have targeted purposes for your skin, and they are NOT substitutes for moisturizers. You need both.
At $45.00 Praimordial Stellar Serum sounds reasonably affordable, but the amount in the bottle is just 0.5 fl.oz. (this might be enough for a few weeks). Really, the cost is more like $90.00 an ounce if I did the math correctly. A similar serum was going for more on the Prai Beauty web site. While that is still not shockingly expensive for a good serum, it’s just one part of a good skin care regimen. Most people will have to take the cost into account when considering whether or not to try Prai, and continue using the serum, longer term.
As to benefits, this restorative serum does have some promise to help protect existing and newly produced collagen in your skin, and keep it from the ravages of environmental stressors. It may also help to reduce the negative effects of sugars on collagen and elastin fibers that can further weaken the skin’s substructure and firmness. It will boost your skin’s moisture level and enhance its lipid barrier, and increase elasticity. Over time, use of a nourishing serum will also help to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, increase luminosity, and help improve your skin’s texture and tone. I took a look on the Home Shopping Network web site at the reviews. It only got a 3.5 out of 5 stars for about 45 reviews. But I also strongly feel that people buy serums thinking that they are wizard’s magical brews, that will instantly turn transform them into glorious princesses. One woman whined that she used the product for two weeks and wasn’t transformed. Most skin care takes time–sometimes a lot of time–to work, and the results will differ depending upon your skin condition, type, etc. It was clear to me that many of the people who said the serum was “disappointing” didn’t have any clue what they could (and should) really expect from this product, or any serum. Personally, I think it is a good one, and if you want to boost the way your skin looks and feels, at least a little bit, you’ll get good results.
