One of the nice things about writing wine reviews is that every so often a really interesting bottle shows up at your door. So it was when we received a bottle of Volage Cremant de Loire Rose (NV: $30). We were really happy to “meet” this lovely sparkling wine.
What Is Cremant?
We are huge fans of Cremant de Loire, which are one of a family of Cremants. These are sparkling wines made using the méthode traditionelle outside of the Champagne region, or using grapes other than the allowed three Champagne varieties.
This particular Cremant is made from one of our favorite varietals, Cabernet Franc. Volage Cremant is made using 100 percent old vines Cab Franc,
Cremant like its cousin Champagne can pair well with a range of foods, but this wine is recommended for fish, shellfish, and chicken, but we can see it meld perfectly with turkey, and lighter pork dishes as well.
Volage is a single vineyard Cremant de Loire Rose that matures on the lees for at least 3 years. Light salmon in color, the nose is furtive with raspberry, apple and some grassy notes. The wine is dusty dry, with Asian pear, strawberry, raspberry and a lot of minerality on the finish.
There are many different brands of Cremant de Loire Rose (like Volage) and they are a great wine choice to bring to parties, as a housewarming gift, or to a wedding shower. Cremant provides the celebratory flair of Champagne along with high quality at a much lower price point.
