French women are just so chic. From Marie Antoinette before the French revolution, to modern shopgirls in the Marais, I defy you to find women (as a whole) who know better how make even a simple top and pants and make them look effortlessly adorable, as if it was a moment’s afterthought to throw on that cute scarf and ballet flats in the perfect, creamy beige.
Now there’s a new makeup collection called “French Accents” that help non French ladies get that instant “je ne sais quois.” And, (lucky us), it’s from Votre Vu.
In July, just before Bastille Day (July 14th) I attended a Bastille day party in honor of the launch of Votre Vu’s French Accents makeup collection. For those who don’t know about Bastille Day, it’s an important national holiday in France formally called La Fête Nationale. It commemorates the 1790 Fête de la Fédération, held on the first anniversary of the storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789 , and the beginning of the French Revolution.
If you want to win your own liberation from too many makeup items with too many unnatural ingredients that don’t do enough for you, the Votre Vu French Accents collection might be just the thing. Votre Vu is already known and loved (by the AdviceSisters, as well) for luxurious skincare products made with natural ingredients: botanicals, marine elements, and lots of anti-aging antioxidants. This new makeup collection compliments the very lovely skincare products. Additionally, the new makeup collection gives back to a good cause. For every French Accents cosmetic purchased, Votre Vu donates $1 to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation in support efforts to treat and cure pediatric cancers.
These may be reason enough to storm (non, not the Bastille), but the Votre Vu online store! Here is the lineup of the entire collection:
LOVE ME DEUX $43.00 – multi-taskers in travel-friendly packaging is something Votre Vu does very well. Love me Deux combines a sheer, build-able tinted moisturizer in one of six shades from light to deep, in a tube with a flip top. But there is a second, flip top cap on top of this one, that holds a matching concealer. The 1 fl. oz tinted moisturizer and the .25 oz concealer are perfect for travel, and there is even a tiny mirror in the concealer cap. Key ingredients include: Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Jojoba Seed Oil (Simmondsia Chinensis), Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Vitamin A Palmitate (Retinyl Palmitate),Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe) Leaf Juice, Kaolin, Lecithin, Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 (Argireline®) and Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5
ARCH DE TRIUMPHE – $24.00 Like it or loathe it, prominent brows are shaping up (pun intended) to be an important part of the Fall must-haves in makeup. Arche de Triumphe features key ingredients of Vitamin E , Silica and Lanolin in a lightweight, water-resistant, blend of soft waxes and micronized minerals that are supposed to mimic the sheer and natural highlights of your hair . Four shades (fair, dark brown, warm, and soft black) are applied from a little pot, using the Votre Vu Brow Brush & Shaper ($18.00) or your own brush. This Brow Brush & Shaper from Votre Vu, however, has a slim, dual ended spoolie on one end, an angled brush on the other. The look is natural, not harsh or overly penciled. Just get the right color and you’re on your way to more defined brows that look pretty, not retro.
VU-ON ROUGE $29.00 is another nifty, travel friendly item. This is a sheer moisture color for lips and face, in three shades: bouquet rose, French tulip, and Ma Cherry (light, medium and deepest). A brushed silver, swivel up tube, dispenses a silky product that is sheer, but has enough color to make it worth your while to apply. No one really wants to have to add layer upon layer upon layer of waxy or sticky product to get the right intensity, after all. Blended with hydrating shea and exotic antioxidant-rich mango seed butters, Vu-On Rouge also features Vitamin E , Jojoba Seed Oil (Simmondsia Chinensis) , Silica and Castor Seed Oil. The result is a silky stick of plant-based pigment that really does do double duty, without being sticky or settling into dry skin or fine lines. I tried Bouquet Rose, a medium pink that looked great as a blush, but was a little light as a lipstick. An overcoat of glass, made it more glamorous.
LINGERIE POUR LES YEUX – $29.00 and LINGERIE POUR LES YEUX – refill ($22.00) multi-tasks to offer a nice eye base in two shades: light or medium. This creamy little pot of eye-loving product has an interior mirror, and the product is full of antioxidants including hibiscus extract, Vitamin E , Beeswax, Silica and Dextrin. The result is a very nice eyelid primer that (Votre Vu Claims in clinical trials) reduced wrinkles by 26% when applied daily for three weeks. Apply it with Votre Vu’s Concealer Brush ($19.00), or use your own.
LE JOLI CRAYON – $23. 00 it is indeed a pencil to make your eyes, tres jolie (very pretty). There are two colors: Carbon (grey) and trendy Aubergine, a soft plum. Key ingredients include: Tocopheryl Acetate , Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil , Grape Seed Extract aqnd Candelilla Wax . The pencil is blendable and easy to use. Here’s a tip though: keep the cap tightly closed between uses so it doesn’t dry out. There is a nice, eye liner pencil sharpener included, but don’t make the tip too sharp because it is a soft pencil, and might crumble or break. Votre Vu suggests applying the color along lash line starting from outer corners of eyes, working inward using short feathery strokes. For a smoky look, gently smudge liner with the sponge tip or use your finger lightly. Instant allure!
My readers know that I’m not such a big personal fan of bronzers, but the Votre Vu BEAUTÉ EN BRONZE ( $34.00 and refill $28.00 ) has a blush and bronzer combo that is really lovely, and stays uncomplicated with just three key ingredients: Kaolin, Vitamin E and Zinc Stearate. The silvery compact with interior mirror holds a deep tan matte bronzer and a shimmered light pink blush, to give your skin warmth and contouring possibilities. What I do especially like about this bronzer/blush duo is the matte finish of the bronzer, that makes it look real, not glittery, shimmery or greasy. To get a believable tan no matter what your complexion tone, just softly swirl the Votre Vu Fluffy Powder brush ($29.00) or your own bronzer/blush brush, over the matte bronzer, tapping off any excess. The swivel up blush/bronzer brush however, is really nice for tote and travel because it is clean, soft, luxurious, and worth a little more. Lightly dust the bronzer on the areas of the face where the sun would naturally hit including cheeks, forehead, nose and a bit on the chin. Build the color gradually to achieve the intensity you desire. Add a touch of the shimmering blush mostly to the apples or high points of your cheeks to create a day-at-the-beach look. And, of course, you can just use the blush or the bronzer without the other, if you choose.
Continuing down the line of the collection, there’s Eiffel Power ($24.00) a nice mascara with a nice lush brush, that is “botanically engineered” to support lashes with curative cotton bloom to strengthen lashes. There is also keratin, repairing and protecting damaged lashes. Beeswax and carnauba and sunflower waxes extend lashes and leave a luminous finish, while earthy kaolin powder instantly builds up your flirty fringe to your desired length. Charbon is a deep charcoal that’s new, and flattering.
BELLE POUDRE ($29.00) is a loose powder mineral powder featuring Mica, Titanium Dioxide, Zinc Stearate, Aluminum Magnesium Silicate, May Contain: Mica (CI 77091), and Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499). You can get it in four tones: light, golden medium, medium or deep. The sheer tint helps to minimize the look imperfections, and the powder also helps to reduce shine. a fragrance and talc-free formula comes in a “close-able” shaker/sifter so it won’t spill all over you or dump all of the contents into the cap when if it is turned upside down. Since these are sheer, you can pretty much choose the one or two closest to your complexion, but medium will suit most.
